I am in no way a professional. A doctor of no sort. Nor a licensed advisor in any way. But one thing I know is what it feels like to hurt. What it feels like to have your heart broken in more ways than one. Ans as someone who truly gets it, I want to share with you a piece of advice given to me, that I will forever cherish. And that is, TALK TO SOMEONE. ANYONE.
In allowing those intense feelings of sadness, loneliness, abandonment, and ultimately low self-esteem build up inside you, you are giving them the power to manifest into your physical world. Making all of your insecurities real.
Being a teenager these days, is anything but easy. Today is a day of influence and pressure to conform. When has it ever not been, right? But in times like these when the world is literally at our fingertips, everything is intensified. Including the amount of people who feel the need to put you down in order to build themselves up.
No one understands that more than I do, trust me. And I never realized it until I opened up the slightest bit to someone. Letting someone else in means letting some of that pent up emotion out. Like poking holes in your every worry of not being good enough, one dismal balloon at a time.
It doesn’t have to be a parent, a teacher, a therapist, or any adult at all. In fact, I believe that no one will understand your pain better than a fellow comrade. And there is no feeling like being truly understood. That is why we created The REAL SLOTAT. Bringing together teens who have experienced pain of all sorts, to share their stories and hopefully, give someone else that ultimate sensation.
When someone can read your words of hurt and discouragement, and look to you and say, “I know what you mean.” your world changes. It makes everything easier. Walking, talking, the sky is brighter, you now hear the music of the birds chirping :) Just kidding. But life just seems so much better. Whether you are bff’s with the person you resonate with, or they’re a complete stranger that feeling of actually having connect with someone never goes away.
You’re not crazy for feeling what you do. You’re not alone and you’re not as much of an outsider as you think. I hope that we here at The REAL SLOTAT can help you to see that. We’re not just words on a computer screen or a quote spitting “non-profit” we’re friends.
Please submit your stories of struggle for Shalyse, a REAL SLOTAT ambassador’s, book. She is creating a compilation of stories from teens all over the world. She is looking for several stories on a wide array of topics. Check out her page here on Tumblr for more information. www.humbleop.tumblr.com
